About the artist Richard Cutshall

Richard Cutshall is a Mexican-American artist who works in the mediums of drawing/painting, printmaking, and sculpture. His vast exhibition record includes over 100 group and solo shows, both nationally and internationally. His work is included in numerous private and public collections throughout the country and internationally.

Some of Richard’s earliest memories involve art and he vividly remembers drawing from an early age; using it as a way to understand the sometimes frightening aspects of the world around him. Today that use of art as a way of gaining understanding continues with Cutshall describing his work as “a kind of self-exorcism.”

Also a teacher with almost 30 years’ experience, Mr. Cutshall has taught at Mt Hood Community College since 2011 teaching Drawing, Painting, 2D Design, and 3D design. One particular rewarding aspect of teaching that Richard enjoys is being able to witness the growth of students and their discovery of the power of art.

Currently Richard resides in Portland, OR where he and his wife Jennifer, another fellow artist,  share their studios and home with one over sized Dantiff and two spoiled cats.

Artist Statement

My first memories are of making art.  At an early age I relied on drawing to help make sense of the world.
My artwork has evolved, but my urge to create remains constant.

My process is driven by a need to explore the unconscious. Archetypal images seem to emerge to reveal the complexity of the human condition.

Through my work I feel connected to a community of art makers; from ancient cultures to my contemporary counterparts. My compulsion to create pushes me across mediums and materials while challenging me to examine the boundaries set by my own aesthetic concerns.

This exploratory process allows me to excavate imagery from somewhere unseen and unknown. I invite viewers to see the remnants of this excavation and hope that the mythos created through my work makes a lasting connection.

I just recently changed my website and changed my hosting platform. I am actively rebuilding the website.
My apologies on the mess! Still Chipping Away!
